Has anyone trekked in a pair of vibrams? In october I'm hiking the Maryland portion of the Appalachian Trail(45 mi.). I need to get some foot wear for it. I haven't worn shoes in probably a year and I'm not looking forward to putting my feet in some boots. I'll get some boots if that is the smart thing to do but I was wondering how the rugged 5 fingers would hold up on a hike where I could be doing 15 miles a day.

Jamison, I have the VFF Treks (the ones with the tread on the bottom) and I can attest that will hold up on hikes in the 10-15 mile range, but I have not taken them above that. Seeing as how others have run 100-milers in VFF Treks, I imagine 45 miles spread over 3 days would be totally reasonable.

One thing I would recommend is Injinji toe socks. A couple hours of movement, especially in the Treks which are made of kangaroo leather, will create a moist and blister-prone environment. Toe socks will help keep the feet dry and alleviate blister problems.

Other options besides VFFs would be low-profile trail running shoes like the New Balance MT100's or the Inov8 212's (more aggressive tread) or 220's (less tread). Have fun!

...and happy birthday Gabe!
