My friend is doing a Runner's World "intermediate" half-marathon program, and she asked me what I thought. I like that it has strength work on two days, but it's highly specialized and blah blah blah. I mentioned how I love squats to strength connective tissue and bones, and somebody gave her this advice:
And, I'd say in reference to the squats, do very little or no weight, just higher numbers of reps. Strength training rips muscle fibers. Do yoga, it lengthens muscles and makes them stronger.
Yes, I shit you not, do yoga to A: lengthen muscles and B: to strengthen them, instead of squats.
"Your muscles cannot get “longer” without some rather radical orthopedic surgery."
"There are few things graven in stone, except that you have to squat or you're a pussy."
Jesus, I really am upset this dude just said to do YOGA instead of SQUATS to get STRONGER.
Yeah it's ridiculous. This is the classic "Lone Wolf and Cub" scene. If your friend chooses the bouncy ball over the sword, then...well we need say no more...
My last post was far too enthusiastic... had to 'remove'. ha! I'd love to train for that T, looks awesome. Thanks for sharing :) I need something about that far out to train for :) There I go with the smiley faces....
If 10 athletes sign up for the Tough Mudder from out Gym, than CrossFit Diesel gets a free advertising booth at the event.
It sounds like we have 3 folks so far.
Also, yoga is awesome! ... For stretching (Which I define as getting stronger at the extremes of your range of motion, and improving functional range of motion). But if someone told me that they 'wanted to run a 1/2 Marathon', I don't think 'stretch and get really flexable' would be my first advice.

Squats was my first bit of advice. :) Then again, I am a Rip follower, so I guess that's par for the course.

Put me down for 2 participants for the Tough Mudder if we get enough interest. It looks AMAZING! I think it would be so much fun.
